Meet Myron, our District Manager, who’s been leading teams with passion and dedication for six years. And for the last 17 years, he’s been leading citizens and local leaders alike as town mayor. “I grew up in Cottage Grove, and I wanted to give back to my community,” Myron says. “I believed I could change things for the better by getting involved.” He raised his family in his hometown, and two of his three sons are now doing the same, making his legacy as mayor all the more meaningful.

He learned important lessons in what leadership takes from his very first bid for council. “When I ran for city council for the first time, I did not win,” he admits. “I thought I could win without doing the work. I learned from my mistake and won the next election by the largest margin ever for a city councilmember in our community’s history.

"So never give up! Learn from your mistakes and move forward .”

Over a decade of experience representing more than 35,000 people held plenty of insights for operating a district, and inspiring his teams at Dollar Tree to work together is top of Myron’s priority list. “We cannot win if each store is operating in a silo,” he explains. “We need to support one another and know that others are there to support us when things do not go as planned. You are not alone.” That applies to his own role – Myron leans on his peers when he faces questions and challenges.

Attending Dollar Tree’s District Manager Leadership Academy sparked Myron's enthusiasm to hone his communication skills. “I find myself being a better listener to my constituents and, in turn, my district team,” he continues. Prioritizing listening and accurately recapping over speaking first is key with his team. “People want to be heard and know you care,” he explains.

“It's all about customer service. Listening, solving issues, and giving direction is the clear link between what I do at Dollar Tree and what I do as a mayor.”

As involved as Myron is in both his stores and his town, he encourages his Dollar Tree team to get involved in the communities where their stores are located as well: read at schools, do a park or road clean-up, or help with local festivals – the possibilities are endless. For his team, they can even partner more formally, like with the Night to Unite Event held at one of his Cottage Grove stores (pictured right).

“If you want to create a better community, get involved,” he advises. “They key in both our store teams and within my town is to know you have a voice and positive change can happen with just one person.”

Passion is where it all starts if you want to get involved in your community. “Find out what your passion is, then go for it!” Myron encourages. “Whether it's getting involved in a citizen advisory commission or festival committee, getting to know your neighbors through neighborhood events, or joining a local club, you can make a difference in your community.”
